Separation of Employment

Employees leave Brown University for many reasons, including new career opportunities, continued education, relocation or retirement. This page outlines key steps to help ensure a smooth and compliant transition.

Before Your Last Day

Prior to your departure, you should:

  • Provide written notice to your manager, including your reason for leaving and your final working day
  • Return University property, such as equipment, keys, ID cards and other materials, to your supervisor
  • Contact the Transportation Office to arrange the return of any parking permits
  • Confirm your home address in Workday* is up to date to ensure timely delivery of your W-2 and other important documents
  • Connect with the Benefits Office at 401-863-2141 at least one week before your last day to discuss benefits and schedule time with a Benefits Specialist

Note: Access to Workday may be unavailable for 24–48 hours following your termination date.

Transitioning to Retirement

Retirement is a significant professional and personal transition. In addition to logistical planning, it’s important to prepare for the impact on your daily routine, professional identity and relationships.

Early planning can help reduce stress and support both you and your team during this transition.
