Employee Education Program

The Employee Education Program (EEP) supports staff development tby providing financial assistance for eligible employees pursuing educational goals at Brown and other accredited institutions.

Eligibility

You are eligible for the EEP if you meet all of the following:

  • Staff working at least 67% time (equivalent to a minimum of 1,300 hours per year)
  • Have completed six continuous months of employment at the time of application
  • Employment status in good standing

Additional notes:

  • Union members receive education benefits as described in their respective Collective Bargaining Agreements
  • Faculty, postdoctoral appointees, dependents and spouses are not eligible for the EEP

Program Options

Each calendar year (January 1-December 31), eligible employees may choose one of the following: 

Eligible staff at Brown University can take advantage of on-campus learning by enrolling in up to three Brown courses per calendar year, including degree, job-related and select non-degree offerings.
Through the Employee Education Program (EEP), eligible staff at Brown University may receive up to $5,250 per calendar year for courses taken at accredited institutions outside of Brown.

Course Timing and Formats

  • The course start date determines which calendar year the benefit applies to
  • Courses may be taken in:
    • In-person formats
    • Online formats
    • Hybrid formats

How to Apply

Submit the appropriate application before your course begins (at least two weeks in advance is recommended). Send completed applications to educational_benefits@brown.edu with “EEP” in the subject line.

Payment and Completion Requirements

Not Eligible for Reimbursement

  • Conferences, workshops, seminars
  • Licensing, exams, memberships
  • Travel, lodging, meals, parking
  • Supplies and miscellaneous fees

EEP Penalties

During any semester in which an employee is approved for courses through the Employee Education Program, the following conditions may result in financial responsibility for the employee:

  • voluntary termination from the University
  • reduction of employmeny to less than 67% time
  • receipt of a grade below a C
  • course failure
  • withdrawal from a course after the official drop deadline

If any of the above occur, the employee will be responsible for the following:

  • Degree and Job-Related Brown Courses: These courses would no longer be eligible for EEP funding. The employee will be financially responsible for tuition and related charges in accordance with the Student Account Financial Policy.
  • Non-Degree Courses at the School of Professional Studies: A request to cancel enrollment must be submitted at least 14 days prior to the course start date. Cancellations made after the course has begun will require repayment of the full tuition cost to the University.
  • Non-Brown courses: Employees are not eligible for tuition reimbursement for these courses.
