Appeals Process
How to Submit an Appeal
Appeals must be submitted in writing and should include:
- A clear description of the individual's concern and the basis for the appeal
- The facts supporting approval of the requested accommodation
- A summary of any efforts made to resolve the matter through University Human Resources
- Any additional relevant information, including supporting documentation
By submitting an appeal, the individual authorizes the release of relevant accommodation-related health information to the ADA/Section 504 Coordinator (or their designee) as needed to review the request.
Confidentiality
This is a confidential process. Medical and health-related information will be shared only to the extent necessary to review and decide the appeal.
Review Process
Upon receipt of an appeal, the ADA/Section 504 Coordinator will review the original decision by evaluating all relevant information. The Coordinator may, at their discretion:
- Request additional documentation
- Meet with the individual submitting the appeal
- Consult with others who have relevant knowledge of the situation
After review, the ADA/Section 504 Coordinator will issue a written decision.
Brown University's ADA/Section 504 Coordinator can be reached at ADA_504@brown.edu or 401-863-2897.
Factors Considered
In reviewing an appeal, the ADA/Section 504 Coordinator may consider:
- Whether established procedures were followed
- Whether relevant information was appropriately considered and supports the decision
- Whether an interactive process occurred between the individual and the University
- Whether the requested accommodation would create an undue hardship for the University
- Any other factors deemed relevant to the review
Final Decision
The ADA/Section 504 Coordinator has final authority in all appeal determinations. The Coordinator will communicate the outcome in writing to all relevant parties.
