Supplemental Individual Disability Insurance

Brown University sponsors a supplemental individual disability insurance (IDI) plan for eligible employees to complement the University group long term disability coverage. The insurance plan is underwritten by Unum, the leading provider of IDI.

A disability due to an accident or illness can happen to anyone. Consider a weekend sports injury…a back issue…a car accident…a serious disease. The loss of income from a long-term disability could be devastating to you and your family. Just over 1 in 4 of today’s 20 year-olds will become disabled before reaching age 67*.

Brown currently provides full-time employees with group long term disability benefits that covers 60% of your base salary to a maximum benefit of $7,500 per month. The Supplemental IDI Plan allows you to protect more of your income if you become disabled and cannot work. This program can increase your level of income protection to 75% of your total income with an additional benefit of up to $10,000 per month.

  • Discounted premiums – because Brown is sponsoring this program, your premiums are discounted.
  • Tax free benefits – any benefits you receive from this supplemental coverage are tax-free.
  • Guaranteed Coverage and Premiums – Unum can’t change your coverage or increase your premiums before you reach age 67 as long as you pay the premiums on time.
  • Portable coverage - this is an individually owned policy that you can take with you at the same benefit amount and premium rates.
  • Enrolled in Brown’s group LTD plan
  • Annual income of at least $80,000
  • U.S. citizen or green card holder
  • Age 70 or younger
  • Non-union occupation.

Underwriting is required if you.apply outside of the Supplemental IDI enrollment window.
