Commuter Choice Spending Account

A Commuter Choice Spending Account allows eligible employees to set aside pre-tax payroll dollars to pay for qualified transit and parking expenses related to commuting to work.

Brown University offers two separate commuter benefit accounts, Transit and Parking, to help employees save on eligible commuting costs.

Important: Transit and Parking accounts cannot be used interchangeably. These benefits do not apply to parking in Brown University-owned lots.

The Transit Account allows eligible employees to contribute up to $270 per month (calendar year 2026) for eligible work-related non-RIPTA mass transit expenses, including:

  • MBTA commuter rail, subway and bus services
  • Other non-RIPTA public transportation options used for commuting to work

The Parking Account allows eligible employees to contribute up to $340 per month (calendar year 2026) for eligible work-related parking expenses, including:

  • Parking at a commercial or non-Brown parking facility
  • Parking at or near a transit station used for commuting to work

This benefit cannot be used for parking in Brown University-owned lots.

Eligibility

Regular faculty and staff working more than 50% time are eligible to participate in the Commuter Choice Spending Account.

Election Changes

Commuter Choice elections are managed through Workday and may be made during open enrollment or at the start of any month.  Employees may change or cancel elections on a monthly basis.

How to Use Your Benefits

Eligible expenses can be paid or reimbursed in one of two ways:

  • Benny Card: Use your Sentinel Benefits “Benny Card” directly at participating transit and parking providers
  • Reimbursement: Submit claims through the Sentinel Benefits online portal.

Unused balances may roll over from month to month and year to year. However, reimbursement cannot exceed IRS monthly limits, and any remaining funds are forfeited upon termination of employment.
