Lactation Resources
Finding a Lactation (Privacy) Room
Private lactation spaces are available across campus. You can locate the rooms using the Brown University Campus Map.
Select “Explore the Campus Map.”
Click the Layers button.
Select the “Lactation Rooms” layer under Campus Resources.
Note: Locations are accessible during standard University business hours. Lactating parents must provide their own pump, adapter, accessories and a small cooler or insulated bag for storage.
Resources for the Lactating Parent
Proactive planning is key to a smooth transition. Use these stages to guide your journey:
Guidelines for Supervisors
Supportive leadership is essential for a successful return to work. Supervisors should familiarize themselves with these best practices:
- Provide Time and Space: Allow for flexible break times during the workday for pumping. Work with the employee to identify a designated lactation room or a private non-bathroom space that meets the Nursing Parents in the Workplace policy.
- Respect Privacy: Be mindful that not all parents will feel comfortable discussing their choices. Maintain confidentiality regarding an employee’s schedule or space needs.
- Foster a Supportive Climate: Educate the team about general support for breastfeeding coworkers to avoid misunderstandings, while always keeping the individual's specific choices private.
Support from Coworkers
A smooth transition depends on a respectful team environment. You can support your colleagues by:
- Being Flexible: Be mindful of lactation times when scheduling meetings or requesting coverage.
- Respecting Privacy: Avoid asking intrusive questions and remain supportive of your colleague’s health and family choices.
