Medical Leave

Employees may need to take time away from work to manage a serious health condition or to support a family member through a medical issue. Whether recovering from an illness, undergoing ongoing treatment, or providing care to a loved one, UHR is committed to supporting employees throughout the medical leave process.

Requesting a Medical Leave of Absence

  1. Submit a Leave Request in Workday: Employees must submit a leave request through Workday as soon as the need for leave is known. When possible, requests should be submitted at least 30 days before the leave start date.
  2. Complete Medical Certification: After submitting the request, employees must provide the required medical certification form to their treating health care provider.
  3. Return Completed Medical Form to UHR: The completed medical certification form must be submitted to the UHR Office of Leave and Accommodations within 15 days of the leave request by email at leave_admin@health.brown.edu or by fax at 401-863-2830.

Medical Leave Approval Process

A medical leave of absence requires formal approval from the UHR Office of Leave and Accommodations. Submitting a request in Workday initiates the review process but does not constitute approval. Workday is used for request submission and internal tracking only.

To receive approval under applicable federal or state protections, such as the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) or the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), employees must submit supporting documentation from a licensed health care provider.

All requests are reviewed in accordance with applicable laws and University policies. A formal decision is communicated in writing by UHR.
