Jury, Bereavement and Military Leave

Brown provides paid time away from work to support employees when they are serving their community, experiencing the loss of a loved one or fulfilling military obligations, while maintaining pay and benefits where applicable.

Jury Duty

All staff employees are eligible for paid time off when called to serve on jury duty. 

Employees will receive their regular pay and benefits for the duration of jury service. When jury duty does not require attendance for a full workday, employees are expected to report to work as scheduled.

Bereavement

All staff employees can request paid time off following the death of a close family member.

Eligible employees receive up to three working days (22.5 hours) of paid bereavement leave for the loss of a:

  • Parent or stepparent
  • Child or stepchild
  • Son-in-law or daughter-in-law
  • Spouse or domestic partner
  • Grandchild
  • Grandparent
  • Parent-in-law or grandparent-in-law
  • Sibling

Employees may also take up to one working day (7.5 hours) of paid time to attend a funeral or memorial service for other relatives not listed above.

Military Leave

Employees who serve in the U.S. military reserves or National Guard may take up to ten working days (two weeks) per calendar year for required training or activation in response to national, state or local emergencies.

During this time, employees continue to receive full pay and benefits. However, compensation received for military duty (excluding reimbursement for room and board) must be remitted to the University.

Employees are expected to return to work on the next scheduled workday following completion of service, allowing for reasonable travel and rest time.

Military Leave Policy
