Salary Ranges

Brown University is committed to maintaining competitive and equitable compensation practices. Salary ranges are established using a structured, data-informed approach designed to reflect both internal equity and external market conditions. These ranges provide a framework for consistent pay decisions across job families and levels.

How Salary Ranges are Determined

Brown participates in salary surveys to stay informed about competitive pay practices. Insights from these surveys help guide the development of annually updated salary ranges, which take effect each year on July 1.

Salaries

Salaries are primarily determined based on several key factors at the time of hire, including:

  • The candidate's qualifications as they relate to the position
  • Internal equity within the organization
  • Market competitiveness for the job family in the markets where Brown recruits

All positions are aligned to a job family, a group of roles that involve similar types of work and require comparable training, skills, knowledge and expertise. Candidates with more experience, as well as those in high demand roles, may have salaries positioned toward the higher end of the salary range.

Union salaries are established in accordance with Brown's collective bargaining agreements.
