Adoption Reimbursement
Eligibility
To qualify for this benefit, you must meet the following criteria:
- You are a faculty or regular staff member working at least 67% time* or greater
- You have completed at least one year of continuous service immediately prior to beginning the adoption process
- The child must be under 18 years of age at the time the expenses are paid or incurred
Note: If both parents are employed by Brown, only one parent is eligible for the reimbursement. This benefit does not apply to the adoption of a spouse’s or domestic partner’s child.
* Percent time is calculated by dividing your scheduled hours and months by the University's standard hours and months for a full-time schedule.
Qualified Expenses
Reimbursement is available for "reasonable and necessary" expenses directly related to one adoption event per employee, per calendar year. These include:
- Professional Fees: Adoption agency fees, court costs and attorney fees
- Travel: Transportation, meals and lodging while away from home during the adoption process
- Legal Requirements: Other expenses required for the principle purpose of the legal adoption
What is not covered?
- Expenses reimbursed by other state, local or federal programs
- The adoption of your spouse’s or domestic partner’s child
- Costs associated with surrogate parenting arrangements
- Expenses incurred while you were not in a benefits-eligible position at Brown
- Any arrangement that violates state or federal law
How to Apply
This is a reimbursement program. Eligible employees may apply for reimbursement for qualified expenses incurred within the current or prior calendar year.
- Gather all itemized invoices and verifying legal documents
- Submit the adoption assistance form
