University Human Resources

For Retiring Faculty

Brown supports faculty through the transition to retirement with options for phased retirement, emeritus appointments and continued access to select University resources and benefits.

Phased Retirement Plan

Faculty members planning to retire should notify their department chair at least six months in advance of their intended retirement date.

Tenured faculty who wish to gradually reduce their responsibilities before retirement may be eligible for a phased retirement arrangement. Similar arrangements may also be available for Senior Lecturers.

For questions about retirement options, please contact Elizabeth Doherty at 401-863-7845.

Appointment as Professor Emeritus/Emerita

Tenured faculty and Professors are typically recommended to the Corporation for appointment as Professor Emeritus or Emerita upon retirement. This title maintains a continuing connection with Brown University, along with select privileges, though it does not include tenure, compensation or faculty voting rights.1

Additional details, including participation in departmental activities after retirement, can be found in Chapter 14 of the Handbook of Academic Administration.

Emeritus/Emerita faculty appointments are considered active and include continued access to key university resources, such as:

  • Brown ID card
  • Brown email account
  • Library privileges, including borrowing and electronic access
  • Computing support through OIT, including software access under University licensing agreements

1With the exception that emeritus professors who also hold a Faculty or University Committee assignment to which they have been elected by the Faculty and/or a teaching assignment shall have voting rights.
