Employee Separation or Retirement

While you may be pleased for a team member as they begin a new chapter, whether through retirement or separation, this transition can also bring uncertainty, disruption and a sense of loss for the team. These reactions are a normal part of organizational change. With thoughtful planning, you can help support the departing employee, preserve institutional knowledge and ensure continuity for your team.

Plan Early and Communicate

As soon as possible, begin conversations focused on planning the employee’s departure. Early planning helps capture critical knowledge, clarify responsibilities and support a smooth transition.

These discussions also provide an opportunity to recognize the employee’s contributions and set up their successor and team for success.

Resources

When an employee leaves their position, supervisors and departments are responsible for completing a number of administrative steps to ensure a smooth and compliant transition. This checklist is intended to support the timely completion of required actions related to separating employees.
