Pay Equity Studies

Brown University is committed to fostering a workplace where all employees feel valued, respected and fairly compensated for their contributions. As part of this commitment, UHR partners with an external compensation consultant on a periodic basis to conduct comprehensive pay equity studies. These studies help identify and address potential salary inequities among non-union, benefits-eligible staff.

In addition to formal studies, UHR continuously monitors internal pay practices to promote equity in areas such as new hire offers, promotions and job audits. This work is done in collaboration with managers and HR Business Partners to support consistent and fair compensation decisions.

What is a Pay Equity Study?

A pay equity study is a detailed analysis of employee compensation designed to identify potential pay differences that may be associated with factors such as gender, race or ethnicity.

The analysis typically includes:

  • Statistical modeling (such as regression analysis) to evaluate pay based on key job-related factors, including job grade, job family, experience and supervisory responsibility
  • Individual pay review to identify specific cases that may require further evaluation or adjustment

These combined approaches help ensure compensation decisions are consistent, fair and based on job-related criteria.

Why We Conduct Pay Equity Studies

Pay equity studies help ensure that employees performing comparable work with similar qualifications and experience are compensated fairly and consistently. They also support Brown’s broader commitment to equity, inclusion and transparency.

Benefits of Pay Equity Studies

  • Fairness: Identify and address potential pay gaps to ensure equitable compensation for comparable work
  • Transparency: Strengthen understanding and confidence in compensation practices
  • Compliance: Support adherence to applicable state and federal equal pay laws
  • Recruitment and Retention: Enhance Brown’s ability to attract and retain a diverse and talented workforce

Study Frequency and Timeline

Pay equity studies are typically conducted every few years. Each study generally takes 4 to 6 months to complete, including data collection, analysis, review, discussion of findings and implementation of any recommended adjustments.
