Business Travel Accident Plan

Brown University provides a Business Travel Accident (BTA) Plan to protect employees traveling on authorized University business. This plan provides accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) benefits and is paid for entirely by the University.

Coverage Overview

This plan is designed for travel on assignment for, or with the authorization of, Brown University.

  • Scope: Covers travel outside of University-owned property within the City of Providence and anywhere worldwide.
  • Requirement: Travel expenses must be reimbursable by the University for coverage to apply.
  • Benefit Amount: The plan pays benefits in the event of an accident resulting in the employee’s death or dismemberment. These benefits are payable in addition to any other life insurance coverage you may have.

When are You Covered?

Coverage is active only during the duration of your business trip:

  • Starts: When you depart from your home, office or other point of origin (whichever occurs last).
  • Ends: Upon your return to your home or office (whichever occurs first).

Important Note on Group Travel: The University discourages group business travel involving more than five employees. In the event of an accident involving a group larger than 25, the University reserves the right to limit the total benefit payable. The current aggregate limit of liability is $10,000,000 per accident.

Eligibility

You are automatically covered under this plan if you meet the following criteria:

  • Faculty and Staff: Regular faculty and staff members who are employed and paid by the University at the time of travel.
  • Special Assignments: Faculty and staff on unpaid sabbatical or special assignment are eligible when traveling at the request of the University.
  • Termination: Coverage ends on your last day of active employment with Brown University.
